Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov quits national team

Bulgarian international and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov said on May 13 2010 that he was quitting the national football team with immediate effect, confirming rampant speculation in Bulgarian-language media that he would do so.

"I feel tired at times and finished for the team. I know that there is a number of young players waiting to prove themselves as strikers and now they will have this chance," he said.

"I had decided that when I reach 30, I would review what I have achieved and if things were not going by plan, I would make room to younger players, said Berbatov, who is now 29.

He recalled all the unsuccessful attempts of the national side to qualify for a major football tournament. The last one and the only Berbatov appeared in was Euro 2004 in Portugal.

Berbatov said he had informed Bulgaria's national coach Stanimir Stoilov of his decision to quit the team. "I talked to him and wished him success and I am sure that the team has a good chance of succeeding with him in charge".

"I took this decision on my own, not under anyone else's influence. I started thinking about my future with the team a month ago," he said.

Answering a question whether he had informed Alex Ferguson, his manager at Manchester United, about quitting Bulgaria's team, Berbatov said that the news would reach Ferguson now.

"My goal is to remain with Manchester United, the best team in the world and to see out my contract with the club. I know I have the qualities to do so".

"I want to ask why every second question I get is about where I am going next year. I wonder why you (the media) are not wishing me luck for my next year with Manchester United but instead are asking me where I am going. By joining Manchester United, I have achieved everything I wanted," he said.

Pressure was also a factor that influenced his decision, Berbatov said, adding that now when he had a daughter, he did not want to "take the stress back home".

"Things have changed since I was 22. I know have a wife and a daughter and they are the most important thing to me.

"The national team will not end with me leaving because players have quit the team before and I don't see why my decision should be interpreted as abandoning the team and the country," he said.

"The reason to leave the team does not have to do with the criticisms I get for my play. I have a plan that I follow. A man should be able to say stop whenever he decides to do so," he said.

Grigor Dimitrov lost the match against the world's number 8 Gilles Simon in the first round of the Marseille Tournament.
Second-seeded Gilles Simon came back from 5-2 down in the last set to beat Grigor Dimitrov 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of the Open 13 on Tuesday.

The Bulgarian was very near the success, after leading with 5:2 in the decisive third set and 30:0 points in the game, but eventually was defeated by the hosts' representative with 6:4, 3:6, 5:7.

The Bulgarian started the match in a very confident way and did not seem embarrassed by his rival's class.

Dimitrov, who won two junior grand slam titles last year, served for the match and was two points from victory over the 2007 champion.

"From the moment I broke back, I felt much better," Simon said. "That hurt him physically and mentally, and I won the next games quite easily."

He saved three break points at 5-4 to take the first set. The eighth-ranked Simon broke Dimitrov at 2-1 in the second set and held on to tie it at one set apiece.

"It was very tough," Simon said. "I played against a very solid opponent who's really strong behind the baseline. He showed that he has the level to compete against the very best."

Grigor leaves the tournament without any points for his active but the fact that he played an equal match against France's No. 1 and winning a set against a tennis player of the world's top 10 may be enough for his confidence for now.

Madonna in Bulgaria in 2009!

In 2009 Madonna's tour "Sticky &Sweet Tour" will include Bulgaria! The tour will also go through Bulgaria, Hungary, Russia, Romania and Serbia.
The specific dates will be published on http://www.madonna.com/, Live Nation, the superstar's producers announce.

On January 28 Madonna announced that she's coming back to Europe and will visit places she's never been to.

Several days later the Queen of Pop announced that Bulgaria is also among those countries. The tour starts in July 4 in London.

"This will be my first time", Madonna shares. "I've never made such a big tour before. I'm so excited to visit places totally unknown to me".

The "Sticky&Sweet" Tour is already a record breaking tour as the most successful tour of a solo-performer in the history of music. Madonna has earned $ 290 mln from this tour.

It is still unspecified who the Bulgarian promoter will be, but the opening act most probably will be Paul Oakenfold, as he supports Madonna in all her stadium concerts.

Bulgaria's Neykova holds off Guerette, wins Rowing's first gold

(BEIJING, August 16) -- Rumyana Neykova of Bulgaria won gold in the Women's Single Sculls on the first day of medal races in Shunyi, finishing in 7:22.34 to hold off Michella Guerette of the United States by 0.44 seconds. Bronze went to Ekaterina Karsten of Belarus who finished in 7:23.98.

Neykova nearly beat pre-regatta favorite Ekaterina Karsten of Belarus in the semifinals, falling short by just 0.43 seconds. But the tables were turned in he final, as Neykova grabbed the narrow victory and handed Karsten her first defeat in the Single Sculls since 2005.

Miroslava Knapkova of the Czech Republic was in the lead for the first half of the race, but fell behind and finished in fifth. US rower Guerette in contrast was at the back of the pack for the first half of the race, but pushed into third at the 1500m and missed gold by a hair.

CSKA Gets Kicked out of UEFA Tournaments
